Manuka honey is a monofloral honey produced exclusively from the nectar of the Leptospermum scoparium (Manuka) tree, native to New Zealand and parts of Australia. Unlike any other honey on Earth, it contains an extraordinarily high concentration of Methylglyoxal (MGO) — a compound formed from dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a phytochemical present in Manuka flower nectar at concentrations found nowhere else in the plant kingdom.
MGO causes bacterial cell lysis, inhibits flagellation, and disrupts bacterial cell division. Additional phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and defensins act synergistically — which is why Manuka honey's antibacterial activity exceeds what MGO alone can produce, and why bacteria cannot develop resistance to it.
Why It Can't Be Replicated
The Manuka tree's unique nectar chemistry — specifically the DHA-to-MGO conversion pathway — does not occur in any other plant species at therapeutic concentrations. This is why authentic Manuka honey must come from New Zealand or Australia, and why it carries formal certification systems (UMF™ and MGO ratings) that protect against fraud.
Regular honey gets its antibacterial activity primarily from hydrogen peroxide.
