The gut requires a structured reintroduction of food. Each phase has specific foods, calorie ranges, and Manuka honey dosing. Never rush between phases.

Phase 1
Liquid / Soft Transition
Days 1–3 after a flare. Clear broths, applesauce, very soft foods. Bowel rest. No solid fiber.
~900–1,100 cal/day
Phase 2
Soft Food Phase
Days 3–10. Low-fiber soft foods. Eggs, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, broth soups.
~1,200–1,400 cal/day
Phase 3
Fiber Build-Up
Weeks 2–6. Gradually reintroduce fiber. Introduce soft vegetables one at a time.
~1,500–1,700 cal/day
Phase 4
Maintenance
Ongoing. Full diet with 30–35g fiber. Anti-inflammatory. Long-term prevention eating.

Kitchen & Preparation Notes

How food is prepared matters as much as what you eat during diverticulitis recovery. These tips are specific to this client's food list.

🍝
Cook pasta VERY soft
Overcooked by conventional standards — completely tender. This reduces fiber hardness and makes it much gentler on the colon wall during healing.
🍑
Peel all fruit during Phase 1–2
Skins contain insoluble fiber that can irritate the colon during recovery. Peel peaches, remove any fruit skin. No seeds of any kind during Phases 1–2.
🥔
Mashed potatoes: butter + whole milk
Use Kerrygold butter + Organic Valley whole milk. No potato skins during Phase 1–2. Potato skin can be tested in Phase 4. Mash very smooth — no lumps.
🥚
Eggs: soft-scrambled preferred
Soft-scrambled in butter is the easiest form to digest. Avoid hard-boiled initially — introduce in Phase 2. Over-easy and poached are also well tolerated.
🍜
Butter + broth pasta sauce only
Instead of tomato sauce (too acidic during recovery), use organic chicken broth + grass-fed butter + Parmesan. Genuinely delicious and completely gut-safe.
🧀
Parmesan: aged hard cheese only
Authentic Parmigiano Reggiano DOP is much easier to digest than soft or processed cheeses. The aging process breaks down proteins and eliminates most lactose.
🍈
Melon: very ripe, room temperature
Very ripe melon is highest in digestive enzymes and softest on the gut. Avoid underripe. Serve at room temperature — cold foods can cause gut cramping.
🥛
A2 yogurt: start small
Begin with 2–3 tbsp in Phase 1. A2 casein is gentler than conventional A1 dairy. Build to ¾ cup by Week 2. Always choose full-fat — no low-fat or non-fat versions.
💧
Hydration: minimum 64 oz water daily
Non-negotiable. Add Buoy electrolyte drops or fresh lemon + pinch of sea salt. Water is essential to move food safely through the colon.
🍽️
4–5 small meals preferred
Smaller, more frequent meals reduce pressure on the colon vs. 3 large meals. Especially important in Phases 1–2. Eat slowly and chew thoroughly.

Daily Supplement Support

Evidence-based supplements used by integrative practitioners alongside dietary protocols for diverticulitis recovery and prevention.

L-Glutamine
5g daily
Heals intestinal tight junctions — most important post-flare gut lining supplement. Take on empty stomach.
Magnesium Glycinate
300mg nightly
Prevents constipation; relaxes colon smooth muscle; supports sleep quality for overnight gut repair.
Vitamin D3
2,000–5,000 IU daily
Supports gut barrier function and immune regulation. Most patients with inflammatory GI conditions are deficient.
Multi-strain Probiotic
Start Week 2 post-antibiotic
L. rhamnosus + B. longum + B. lactis. Do not start immediately after antibiotics — wait 2 weeks. Rotate strains every 3 months.
Omega-3 Fish Oil
2g EPA/DHA daily
Reduces systemic inflammation; helps lower risk of recurrence; protects gut mucosal integrity over time.
Manuka Honey 🍯
UMF 10–15+ daily
Antibacterial, prebiotic, anti-inflammatory. Full protocol in Section 06 below. Replaces all other honey permanently.

Manuka Honey Protocol

A complete research-backed guide to incorporating Manuka honey throughout your diverticulitis recovery — from acute flare through long-term prevention.

Why Manuka Works
for Diverticulitis

Manuka honey's Methylglyoxal (MGO) compound causes bacterial cell lysis, inhibits flagellation, and disrupts cell division — active inside the digestive tract where most antibacterials are deactivated. Its oligosaccharides act as prebiotics that specifically rebuild Bifidobacterium, the genus most depleted by antibiotic treatment. Unlike antibiotics, bacteria cannot develop resistance to it.

C.diff
Directly targets C. difficile — the pathogen that overgrows after antibiotics, the most common diverticulitis complication
Zero
Zero documented cases of bacterial resistance — unlike repeated antibiotic courses
IL-6↓
Reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6 — the exact markers elevated during diverticulitis flares
🦠
Antibacterial Against Gut Pathogens
Effective against E. coli, Salmonella, S. aureus, and critically C. difficile — the pathogen that overgrows when antibiotics wipe out good bacteria. MGO causes bacterial cell lysis and disrupts division.
→ Addresses the most dangerous post-antibiotic complication in diverticulitis recovery.
🧬
Biofilm Disruption
Colons with diverticulitis can develop mucosal biofilms — bacterial matrices resistant to antibiotics that trigger chronic immune activation. Manuka's enzymatic compounds break these structures down.
→ Biofilm in diverticula pockets drives recurring flares. This is a mechanism antibiotics cannot reach.
🌱
Prebiotic — Feeds Bifidobacterium
Oligosaccharides in Manuka honey specifically increase and support the growth of Bifidobacterium — the exact beneficial genus devastated by antibiotic treatment for diverticulitis.
→ Rebuilds the microbiome through food, working alongside probiotic supplements.
🔥
Reduces Cytokine Inflammation
Significantly decreases TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6. In research models, ulcers healed faster and oxidative damage was reversed after Manuka honey treatment.
→ Directly reduces the inflammatory cascade at the gut lining alongside dietary protocol.
🛡️
Gut Lining Protection
Blocks pathogenic microorganisms from attaching to the intestinal epithelium — protecting the gut wall from infection while coating and soothing the mucous membrane lining.
→ Diverticula pockets are exactly where bacteria lodge and infect. Epithelial coating reduces this risk.
⚗️
Zero Antimicrobial Resistance
Multiple simultaneous mechanisms (MGO, hydrogen peroxide, phenolic compounds, defensins) make bacterial resistance to Manuka honey essentially impossible to develop.
→ Safe to use alongside or after repeated antibiotic courses without contributing to resistance.
